Dr Frankenstien strikes again!

So I made these cuties

Sorry one is naked- I dont have much that fits her. They are all heads from dolls in the barbie video game hero line, put onto either skipper or stacey bodies. I love the faces of these dolls, but they all have awful bodies. Either they have sculpted on clothes and limited articulation, or they have daft gimmicks, which also result in sculpted clothes and articulation problems.

I put this one on a Stacey body, because I ran out of Skippers. I would have liked them all on one type of body, but I dont think the height variation is so extreme that it looks unnatural. This one is currently nude because I dont have a good stash of Stacey sized clothes like I do with Barbie sized dolls.

This girl is on a Skipper body. The only reason she’s clothed is cos the Skippet was, I dont think it exactly suits her. Ill make her something better.

I found a Barbie outfit to fit this one. I dont have a massive stash of Skipper outfits either, but I found that the top and skirt from an older Barbie fit ok, and then the gilet on top is newer, but still seems to fit ok.

I plan to make them all new clothes, something suitable cute and fitting for their anime-type faces. So, wheres the frankenstien moment?

These two look ok, even with the obvious skin tone difference. No, heres the frankenstien moment

This body is supposed to have some sort of game, played by buttons on the belt. Lights up and stuff. But the legs literally cant move at all. Im gonna donate my creation, but I certainly wouldnt buy it!

I had a bit of a frankenstien moment

One of my regular charity shops has started putting several dolls together in a bag to sell. Theyve done it a few times now. It seems like this is kinda common in american thrift shops, Ive seen it a lot in peoples thrift shopping and haul videos, but it isnt so usual in the UK. Our charity shops are quite small, and its pretty usual to find a shop with only one or two dolls, so they just get put out individually. Anyway, this shop is doing it for some reason.

So now, I have the thing where you want to buy one specific doll, but it comes with a few others you dont want, so do you spend the extra and then get rid of the others, or you have to find a use for them. Anyways there was a bag with three dolls. One wierd dora the explorer doll (I love those), a strawberry shortcake who is kinda cute, Im sure Ill do something with her. And finally, this other doll. Id never have bought her on her own. Her face is cute, but the body was shaped a bit like a troll dolls. The legs didnt move at all, she couldnt sit down or anything, shoes were molded on, and her arms just pivoted. I should have taken a photo of her but I forgot to do it before Id destroyed her 🙂

See, cute face. The body shape was super wierd though. It would have been hard to make clothes for, it was so thick and the feet were super wide. So I figured seeing as I had her, Id try a body swap. I had no idea if it would work, because her neck was quite thick, so I decided to find a very cheap body donor in case destruction resulted.

Yeah, it worked ok! The body I found was a budget barbie clone type, for 30p in a charity shop. The kind with just rooting on the hairline, and then the hair tied up to cover the massive bald spot. She had no clothes, but the word Abbie is molded all over her underwear, so I guess thats the brand. Again, I forgot to take before photos of either doll. My bad.

Abbie has joints in her legs, which is cool too. I really like how she turned out. The skin tones dont match, but its not super obvious. If you hold her in your hands you can totally see it, but oh well.

The neck is too small for the neck hole. I used hot glue to bulk up the neck peg, so now the head stays on in the right place, although it doesnt really move.

Yeah. Doesnt look great up close. Normally when I do body swaps where I end up with a spare head and body I dont want, I combine them and redonate the resulting doll. If Ive done this with two Barbies to get a better articulated body, it totally works, and you end up with a perfectly good doll. This time though it wasnt gonna happen at all. The Abbie head was too small for the neck, and I managed to destroy the other dolls neck completely anyway.

However, I am still happy with her. I reckon the whole project cost me less than £1, so even though she’s not perfect I dont care. I think she looks cute, and kinda different. She’ll be fine sitting on my shelf

‘Lolita’-style doll dress

So I made this last month

Gonna start off by just saying, that I do not know a lot about lolita. Ive seen photos and liked it and thats about it. I understand that there are rules about what counts as lolita, and which type etc, at least according to some people. Seen big ol’ arguments in comments section! So yeah. Im not trying to say that this dress is lolita. But, photos of lolita stuff was where I got the inspiration.

Anyway, I chose the blue scheme because of the dolls purple hair

She’s actually a hybrid doll. I found a basic, fairly modern Barbie doll with the purple hair, and switched her onto a body with knee and elbow joints. Its actually one of my favourite Barbie bodies because of the larger, flat feet. I related to those a lot as a kid! I wanted to do this cos although I like the body, a lot of the dolls that have it seem to look pretty similar terms of face and hair, so this gives me some variety. Plus, its one of the older bodies with the more exaggerrated waist, which I think works with this dress style. And, obviously, I did a repaint. Not totally happy with the eyes because I accidentally splodged the paint a bit when I did the whites of the eyes, and didnt want to take it all off and start over

The skirt has four layers, I wanted it super poofy

Theres two layers of white, which is actually one strip of fabric folded in half and sewn on. I added lace to one of the white layers. I was going to do both, but the skirt was probably big enough. The only thing Im not happy with is the sleeves. I used a stretchy lace for the lower part so that I could get them over her hands more easily, but it really hasnt held up very well

You can see theres quite a big hole there in the right forearm? The left is the same. And thats after really gentle use, I only put it on and off her maybe 3 times max for the fitting, and then once when it was done, and we got these giant holes.

Apart from that though, Im really pleased with her!

Slightly random custom doll

So I had some spare doll parts from other customs, and I decided to combine them

Disney store mulan head on a raven queen body. The hair is pretty damaged, so im still considering giving her a trim.

For some reason I just got inspired to make her a witch. The cloak and hat are from bratzillaz yasmina clairvoya

I made the dress, though its hardly my finest work. Its kind of just a sack with a belt and lots of bits of net

Without the belt you can see its really just shapeless. She’s got raven queens tights on and the necklace is actually shriek wrecked clawdeen

I thought it kinda worked with the moon on it. And everything else is just pinched from casta fierce

Including the ridiculous broom/microphone stand

Here I tried to pose her like she’s riding it.

I also touched her face up a tiny bit

Just did the eyebrows and lips. I think mulan just has quite a distinctive face, so i wanted to tweak it a little bit. In my head she’s mostly a nice witch.

I made a sofa!

Damn, that photo came out fuzzier than i expected. Anyway, I made it. My mum gave me some scraps of foam, because she’s been reupholstering some real-sized furniture, so I made this.

Heres my foam rectangles laid out; a back, two arms, and two seat pieces. That makes the seat high enough, and I wanted to have it fold out.

I scaled it to my famosa hello kitty dolls, because Im feeling very inspired by them right now.

I kind of rounded off the arms and back, but only roughly, because I figured it wouldnt show once they were covered. Then I made each piece a little pouch out of my fabric (its a scarf, by the way. I thought the texture worked quite well), basically just by wrapping them in it, tacking it on, then taking it off and running the sewing machine over the tacks. Once each piece was encased, I just stitched them together at the edges. Ive no photos of those bits because I was taking it about with me and doing bits of sewing whilst I was out, which isnt ideal for photos

So, it works as a sofa

Then folds out into a little bed (also, I made the bedding)

When its folded out, its just long enough for her to lie flat. Obviously, a bigger doll isnt going to fit on it like this, but I think they can get away with using it folded up

Gigi looks pretty natural on it, I think. The proportions arent perfect, but I honestly think they’re better than some Ive seen on factory-made stuff, and overall Im really happy with it. Its a lot more robust than what could make using cardboard, cos if you step on it, it’ll just bounce back. It could probably even survive a gentle trip through the washing machine if it really had to. I want to make some more, though Ive only got so much leftover foam. Id be tempted to make one for an 18″ though, and Id need to buy new for that. Maybe one day 🙂

Hello Kitty Club dolls by Famosa

Once again, TKMaxx has proven a goldmine!

I picked this little cutie up a couple of weeks ago. At the time I didnt know anything about her except that she was cute, and Id just got payed after being kinda broke and not able to buy dolls for a bit. That photo is rubbish, even by my standards, because i quickly snapped it on the pavement before ripping into the box. I was on my way somewhere else, and the packaging was super bulky, compared to the contents. I took a quick photo reminder, got rid of all the excess packaging, and then she fitted into my bag nicely.

She’s cute, if a tad cross-eyed. But then, whilst unboxing her, I discovered her articulation. Its fabulous! I didnt expect anything from such a small doll, and you couldnt see it in the packaging, but she has double knees, and elbows

Girl can touch her face! It was love, and I promptly got on with the repaint I was now certain she needed

Im really pleased with it. I think it suits her really cute look much better

And she poses so nicely! I immediately want to make her a bedroom, with lots of pink and frills 🙂

I wanted more of these dolls, so I went online. The shipping was kinda ridiculous, as well as the range being super limited, but I had the inspiration to look on amazon.es. id looked on the uk amazon with no luck, but not only were there loads on the spanish version, but they were relatively cheap, and I think the shipping was too. I say I think because my spanish is quite rusty. So I interpreted it as that the shipping for quite a few dolls was like €6. Hopefully Ive not goofed and spent way more than I thought!

Now I can put a direct face comparison. Some faces were better than others. This was one of the better ones, and this

Was definitely the worst. Yes, her irises are that light in real life, and both her lipstick colour and placement really stand out as being particularly bad. Her dress is no great shakes either. Quite a few of the dresses were a bit odd, but thats fine, because I have sewing plans for them. Repainting plans too, though those will have to wait cos Im out of sealant. Im smitten though, these little guys really inspire me to create for some reason

Another strange dora the explorer

I found this doll in a charity shop. She’s a bit odd-looking, but she also looked like she might be big enough to wear some of my 18″ clothes, and I do have a bit of a thing about ugly dora dolls

When I got her home, I realised Id estimated her size wrong. She’s actually a fair bit smaller than 18″, but I think the weight is misleading, she feels heavier than Andrea.

I dont really like her face, and the sculpt would make it difficult to really change her expression. But, I do enjoy working with different sculpts, so here we go

I managed to find some stuff in my stash that sort of fits her. Its a little bit loose, and I think its supposed to be for a soft toy, because it has no fastenings. You’d be able to squish a teddys head through the neck of the t shirt, but I had to cut down the back and sew in velco so dora could get it on

Im pretty happy with how her face came out. I think it looks softer and a bit less vacant and staring. Plus, visible eyebrows tend to make a difference. She pretty much had her mouth sculpted open too, so the teeth fit really nicely. I think she looks more like a kid having fun playing around, and more in the spirit of the character at least, even if she isnt a total likeness of the cartoon. She is an odd size though, I cant really pose her with anyone else in my gang.
